He was the fourth child of Mary Fifield and Samuel Adams (elder). Adams’ father was a merchant, popular Whig party leader, and deacon of Old South Church. His was highly respected in Boston for his good deeds, faithfulness and for his fortune which, came from a rum and ale brewing business.
