Week 3 Written Assignment Carla Zemeckis Survey of Mathematical Methods Instructor: Kevin Kuznia February 6, 2012 Project 1 In India they use a method for solving quadratic equations. There are six steps to solving the equation. I will show four different equations and the steps I use to solve them. A) x²-2x-13=0 step one move the constant term to the right side of the equation. x²-2x-13=0 turns into x²-2x=13 to do this add 13 to both sides of the equation. Step two Multiply each term in the equation by four times the coefficient of the x² term. x²-2x=13 turns into 4x²-8x=52 to do this multiply x² by 4. Gives you 4x² then 4*2x=8x and 13*4=52. Step three square the coefficient of the original x term and add it to both…show more content…
Step four take the square root of both sides. 4x²-8x+4=56 turns into 2x-2=±7.48 to do this the square root of 4x² -8x +4 = 2x -2 and the square root of 56 is 7.48. Step five set the left side of the equation equal to the positive square root of the number on the right side of the equation and solve for x. 2x-2= 7.48 and x= 4.74 to do this add 2 to both side of the equation 2x=9.48 then divide 2 by both sides and it gives you x= 4.74 Step six set the left side of the equation equal to the negative square root of the number on the right side of the equation and solve for x. 2x-2= -7.48 and x = -2.74 to do this add 2 to both side of the equation 2x= -5.48 then divide 2 by both sides of the equation to give you x= -2.74 Follow these steps for the rest of the equations. B) 4x²-4x+3=0 Step one 4x²-4x= -3 Step two (4x²-4x= -3)16 turns into 64x²-64x=…show more content…
To get x= -16 D) 2x²-3x-5=0 Step one 2x²-3x-5=0 turns into 2x² -3x=5 Step two 2x² -3x=5 turns into (2x² -3x=5)8 or 16x²-24x=40 Step three 16x²-24x=40 turns into 16x²-24x+9=49 Step four 16x²-24x+9=49 turns into √16x²-24x+9=√49 or 4x-3=±7 Step five 4x-3=7 add 3 to both sides 4x=10 then divide 4 by both side to get x=2.5 Step six 4x-3= -7 add 3 three to both sides 4x= -4 then divide both side by 4 to get x= -1 In conclusion I have showed the steps to use the India method and showed a few equations using the method. It does work just not every time. Project 2 Mathematicians have found a formula to use that will equal a prime number. The following equation x²-x+41= prime number. I will substitute the x with random numbers and solve the equation and see if it will be a prime number. I will also try to find a number to use in the equation that will result in a composite number. x=3 (3*3)-3+41=47 or 3²-3+41=47 x=18 (18*18)-18+41=347 or 18²-18+41=347 A) x=25 (25*25)-25+41=641 or 25²-25+41= 641 B) x= 37 (37*37)-37+41= 1373 or 37²-37+41=1373 C)
