Photography Timeline The concept of photography has existed and has been discussed for hundreds of years. Throughout the centuries, many talented inventors have developed numerous different ideas, slowly progressing from assisting tools to the cameras we know today. The oldest known photograph The oldest known photograph Many philosophers, including Mozi and Aristotle, discussed the concept of photography many centuries before the first camera was created. Alhazen (Ibn al-Haytham), who lived from 965 to 1040 CE, invented the first camera obscura—a term first coined in 1604 by German astronomer Johannes Kepler, literally meaning “dark room”—and described why the images were upturned. People had only used the camera obscura for viewing or drawing—not for taking photos—until 1827, when Joseph Nicephore Niepce successfully captured a scene. These heliographs or sun prints were the first prototypes of photos. The images, however, required eight hours of exposure and later faded. In 1829, Louis Daguerre formed a partnership with Joseph Niepce to improve the process Niepce had established. During 1839, Daguerre eventually developed a more convenient and effective method through the use of silver-plated copper, iodine and silver chloride, naming it the daguerreotype. The silver was first polished, before being coated in iodine, creating a surface sensitive to light. The plate was then placed within a camera and exposed to light for a few minutes. The plate was finally bathed in a solution of silver chloride to create a lasting image. After the death of Niepce, Daguerre and Niepce’s son sold the rights for the daguerreotype to the French government. It quickly gained popularity; by 1850, there were over 70 daguerreotype studios in NYC.
