By comparing the poems ‘My Last Duchess ‘and ‘Porphyria’s Lover’, both by Robert Browning the 19th Century Romantic poet, it is possible to explore their dramatic effectiveness and the different methods which are used by Browning to reveal character. In ‘Porphyria’s Lover’, the reader is given an insight into the warped mind of a controlling man who will kill in order to make his love last forever, whilst in ‘My Last Duchess’ the jealousy and the need for domination by the Duke is revealed. Both poems are written in the form of a dramatic monologue; the poem is narrated strikingly, in the first person, by a single character, in these cases a male lover. Browning may have chosen to use this form of writing as it makes the reader more closely involved with the events described in the poem, than they would be if it was written in the third person. It also allows individual readers to experience the powerful emotions described in the poems, letting the reader visualise the proceedings depicted in the poems in their minds eye.
The use of “...we are, for as long as we are.” (Line 16 and 17) Shows that Duffy is inviting her readers into the poem to help reflect upon how she feels. The formats of these pieces are all varied. Firstly, both Malloy and Browning frequently embed the personal pronoun ‘my’ into their controlling characters narrative. For example, the controlling character in Les Grands Seigneurs quotes ‘men were my buttresses’ in the opening line, whilst similarly, in the opening line of My Last Duchess, ‘that’s my last duchess painted on the wall’. This use of ‘my’ enables both characters to develop a sense of possession over their loved ones to the readers immediately; thus allowing their retelling of love to their audiences to be easier. This sense of control is only further strengthened by another technique used by both poets, the regular inclusion of caesuras.

Throughout the poem Marvell’s man uses many different techniques to encourage the woman. Initially he uses extreme praise to win her over, then straight flattery, moving on to almost threatening her, and finally he begins to boast about himself to her. Robert Browing’s poem My Last Duchess is about the relationship between a Duke and his Duchess. In this poem, the Duke is speaking to his envoy, and I think that within the poem he describes how he killed her, what her personality was like and how he is arranging for his envoy to find him another Duchess. Already, there is a clear pattern shown in these poems in the relationships between men and women; the man has little respect for the female.
