Myself I come from a fully diverse dual nationality family. My parents have lived in the United States for over 25 years yet it seems as if they have lived in the country for less than 3 years. I am part of a first generation Mexican family that has lived in the united states and I am experiencing what most first generation immigrant families go through which consists on the parents never adapting to the culture and the children doing their best to coexist in their new environment. I live in the Imperial Valley where most of the residents are Mexican-American, yet I take pride that know and value both American and Mexican cultures. All my family members have dual nationality in Mexico and the United States. Having dual nationality makes it easy to identify ourselves if we are in either country. In the last 10 years I have noticed that when I visit Mexico, most of the residents of the country automatically know that I do not reside in Mexico. It may be the way I talk or the way I dress that overall makes them determine that I am not a resident. Yet since I have dual nationality and I am fluent in both English and Spanish I can always prove to them that I still carry my Mexican culture. A lot of people who live in Mexico believe that foreigners do not respect their culture and that Mexican-Americans have assimilated to the United States culture and do not respect their Mexican roots. I take pride of belonging to a first generation immigrant family since I carry both cultures, and it is my responsibility to pass that to my future children since culture can be lost if it is not enforced.
