Datren Awkward English 112 Dr. Robinson 10/10/12 Research Paper Audience: American Men The Pursuit of the Ideal Body Image Body image is based on how one perceives him or herself pertaining to attractiveness and how other people receive the physical appearance of a man or woman. In the past, body image has been seen as an issue that affects women, but in the recent years (1990’s- present) it has affected men as well. Although the media have made men question their image, the media also made more men health conscious. Print and electronic media have sparked a fire in all males, of all ages, to strive for “perfection” in a society where the saying “may the best men win” is held at very high standard. Traditionally, a male’s role in society is defined by security, such as being a sole provider, but today men feel the need to display their strength through their physical appearance.
Also men are more likely to go out at the weekend with other men to drink and smoke which can cause a lot of complication in the future such as liver failure and heart failure which is very dangerous to a person heath and they can become very ill. About 10 million people which is about a 6th of the population smoke in the world, 22% of this is men and 19% of that are women, http://www.ash.org.uk/files/documents/ASH_93.pdf so this shows that more men smoke then women making it easier for them to develop problems in the future and possible die from this addiction. statistics show that over 100,000 people die from smoking related causes. http://www.ash.org.uk/files/documents/ASH_93.pdf. also men are more likely to be influenced by other men to smoke or drink even if they don't want to do this, whereas women are more likely to say no if they were told to. http://www.news-medical.net/news/20110609/National-survey-finds-women-more-likely-to-see-doctor-on-regular-basis-than-men.aspx
Women have not modified their smoking habits as much as men have. In 1994 there was a 24% drop in smoking in males compared to 15% in women. There has been an increase in female admissions to alcohol rehabilitation clinics. This could be due to more female alcoholics or a decrease in the stigma associated with these clinics. However, more men drink to medically dangerous levels than females.
Men are paid higher salaries than women. Women cannot walk freely in the streets. These are some of the examples which show that men are still reining the world. The case of male dominance is worst in the third world countries where people are poor and illiterate. I also have experienced many incidents in which I have been neglected just because I am a girl.
I find this topic of interest because it is interesting that after so many years of struggling for equality with males, females have still not found a balance in all aspects of life. I think it’s very unfair that even when playing sports of equal difficulty level, there is a heavy bias towards males when it comes to the paycheque. There is no reason why men should be making ten (or more) times the amount women are for doing the same thing. I hope to find some hope upon my research that there is starting to be more equality with of male and female professional athletes.
“List of Most Powerful Women Spotlights Advances, Inequality” Reflection Throughout history men have been portrayed as the more powerful sex and women the weaker. I personally don’t believe one can measure this “power” on such a large scale. Both sexes have areas in which they can be considered superior, but only as a generalization. For example, not all men are stronger than all women. Some guys are shrimpy.
Since the mid-1950s, suicide rates around the world have risen by 60%. Rates among young people have risen even faster, to the point where they are now the age group at highest risk in 35% of the world’s countries. The specific demographics, however, vary from country to country. China’s pattern, for example, is very different from that of most other countries. China has a suicide mortality rate of 23:100,000, with a total of 287,000 deaths by suicide each year.
Finally, the public’s view of males in the nursing profession leaves men apprehensive and raises the want to protect their masculinity. Research shows that the, once female dominated, nursing profession has significantly been updated by the up rise of males entering this work field, however, unfortunately, males are limited to advancement based on the biased minds of the feminist who run the nursing profession. History’s view of male nurses still holds the position that nursing is a single-sex occupation and also something that is natural to the female gender. Medeaus writes, “Nursing is an occupation established by women it supports the feminine image with traits of nurturing, caring, and gentleness in contrast to masculine characteristics of strength, aggression, and dominance (6) it is almost as if people do not believe that men can encompass the traits that women need to be nurses. History in a sense perpetuates the notion of men nurses as anomalies.
We must ask what do statistic show and why? In actuality anyone who engages in unprotected rectal sex is more at risk for HIV, men and women alike. Men who are in monogamous relationships and have protected sex are not an increased risk. Others argue that statistical analysis shows higher prevalence of HIV in men who have sex with men. We must ask ourselves is the problem gay males or is the problem rectal unprotected sex.
