Major League Lacrosse Loses Four Teams: Failure Andrew Hochheimer KNES 456 October 3, 11 Organizational failures occur in the sports world all the time. Most of these failures are broadcasted all over Sportscenter or other sports news programs where they are dissected and critiqued by the analysts. The failures that are on these programs usually are from major televised sports like football, baseball, or basketball. Examples include the Boston Red Sox recent meltdown not making the playoffs, the Metrodome’s roof collapsing, or the Miami Heat not winning the NBA Championship last year. This model has eight steps that will help to ensure that the decision being made is in fact rational. One must first identify the real problem in the situation. In the case of the MLL, the problem was the East Coast market was too small. Following this step there needs to be an objective identified in order to alleviate the problem (Hums & Maclean, 2009). The objectives for the MLL was expanding their league to the West Coast and cater to new markets. The next step is very important, gather all pertinent information (Hums & Maclean, 2009). This may be where the MLL rushed things a little. They had just created a start-up league five years prior and before they could even see if the initial league was sustainable, they added more teams. They could have also spent more time on brainstorming different alternatives like adding one team at a time instead of introducing four new teams to the West all at once. The model next requires one to examine the pros and cons of the alternatives (Hums & Maclean, 2009). In this case there is really only one pro, the additional teams could be successful and the league will make money. There is also only one con; the new markets may not enjoy professional outdoor lacrosse as much as the league had anticipated. The next steps are to make the decision and then evaluate the decision that had been made (Hums & Maclean, 2009). Ultimately the MLL made the decision to expand the league by adding the four new teams to the West. After the teams had in fact failed and were forced to fold, the league was able to evaluate this decision and determine it may not have been the best decision to make at the
