Associate Level Material Lemurs in Madagascar Assignment View the “Lemurs in Madagascar – Surviving on an Island of Change” video. Using the information found in this video, and in Ch. 5 and 6 of Visualizing Environmental Science, answer the following questions in 25 to 100 words each. 1. What are Madagascar’s biomes? Discuss the major features of at least one of these biomes. Use the textbook for biome examples. From the map in chapter 6.1 of the text for this week it appears that Madagascar has 3 biomes, they include Tropical rain forest, tropical dry forest, and savannah. In the tropical rain forests, temperatures throughout the day are warm and rain occurs almost daily. The soil is highly-weathered, according to Berg, Hager, & Hassenzahl, (2011), and ancient and poor in minerals. The trees in this biome form a canopy which allow little sunlight to reach the forest floor. 2. What changes happening in Madagascar are posing challenges for lemurs? Give details about the sources, time scale, and types of change. From what I understand, destruction of the habitat is taking place as it normally does, much faster than the evolutionary process will ever be able to adapt to the new habitat. The evolution process for the adaptation of the primates, including the lemurs, in Madagascar took 60 million years. The lemurs are challenged by logging, and other lemurs as there are over thirty species. 3. Which types of lemurs are adapting to the changes? Which types of lemurs are not adapting well? Why? The ring-tail lemur are adapting to change much better than the specialized types. These particular lemur are widespread and adapt to the secondary environment; the environment created by humans. These lemur will use crops of locals and other resources for survival. Other specialized lemurs, lemur that are less widespread
