In your project this week, you will explore advanced directives, torts and your role in healthcare while respecting patient’s rights. This form requires health professionals to document both how they have come to the conclusion that the patient lacks the capacity to make this particular healthcare decision, and why the proposed treatment would be in the patient’s best interests. It also allows the involvement of those close to the patient in making this healthcare decision to be documented. The development of these forms does not change the current position on when written, as opposed to oral, consent to treatment is necessary. It is a matter of local determination what form of consent is appropriate for individual procedures, within the broad guidelines set out in the model consent
The Ethical Dilemma Regarding ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ Orders. Whilst on placement on an Adult Rehabilitation Ward, I observed an ethical dilemma. The patient concerned was issued with ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ (D.N.R.) order. This decision was reached after the consultant, named nurse, patient and the patient’s family discussed together and based their decision on the patient’s age, condition, quality of life and wishes.
Without capacity to make particular decisions about their advanced care plan the individual would not be able to participate in the process, an advanced care plan enables those with capacity to state their wishes and choices in relation to their care and treatment in the event that they lose the capacity in the future to decide for themselves or lose the ability to communicate them. 2.6 Explain the meaning of informed consent.
