By the time the Civil war broke out, David, who thought secession was an act of treason, moved from Virginia to New York to offer his service to the union. In April, 1862, while commander of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, “Flag Officer” Farragut took the city and port of New Orleans. As a reward, the Union created the new rank of Rear Admiral. In July 1862 Farragut passed the batteries defending Vicksburg, but was unsuccessful in his attempt of taking it and was forced to withdraw his fleet. In 1863 Farragut seriously mishandled his role at the Siege of Port Hudson.
The Great Gatsby Essay In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway, the narrator, recently moved from the Midwest to New York to start his career in the bond business. Nick’s cousin, Daisy Buchanan, lives in the aristocratic neighborhood of East Egg with her husband Tom Buchanan. Tom is cheating on Daisy with George Wilson’s wife, Myrtle Wilson. Nick’s neighbor is Jay Gatsby, a man who almost married Daisy but decided to leave her to enlist in the war. Since Daisy was so desperate to get married, she married Tom instead of waiting for Gatsby.
Jay Gatz or later to be called Jay Gatsby, also had his own American Dream he was in pursuit of. Daisy Buchanan was Gatsby’s American Dream. When Gatsby first meets Daisy, he’s not wealthy. Jay Gatsby soon goes off to war and doesn’t speak to Daisy for years. He soon sees an opportunity to rekindle his once deep love for Daisy once Nick Carraway moves next door.
Fitzgerald began his last novel The Last Tycoon, but he was in terrible health. The alcohol had taken its toll on him. It seemed to have affected Fitzgerald the most out of that, his marriage, and the American Dream. He had “Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy” which led to “Angina Pectoris.” (“F. Scott Fitzgerald”).
But unfortunely he was not a healthy kid during his childhood. When he was 21 years old in 1816, James had gotten accepted to the University of North Carolina as a sophomore. He was planning to make up for lost time back when he was too distracted about his gallstones to work as hard as he could as a child. By the time of 1818, he had graduated college at the age of 23 years old with honors and he had decided to enter the exciting world of politics. Soon after his graduation, he left for Nashville to study law with the Nashville lawyer, Felix Grundy.
June 19, 1903 was the day Henry Louis Gehrig was born in East Harlem, New York. In 1933, he married Eleanor Twitchell Right after his high school years he played in Hartford to help earn money for his family. He went to Columbia University before playing for the Yankees in 1925. While being on a football scholarship, Gehrig was majoring in engineering. He played both baseball and football starting his sophomore year because during his freshman year he got caught accepting money for playing on a professional team.

In the story daisy and Gatsby break up because Gatsby is going to world war 1, fitzgerald dropped out of Princeton to join the army, and went into world war 1. After Zelda and fitzgerald got married they moved to new York and got an apartment there. In the story, while daisy and fitzgerald had just started dating again, they got a secret apartment in new York. Gatsby had lavishing parties to try to impress daisy.

In the letter that john Downe wrote to his wife to persuader her to immigrate to the United States, with him he explained to her the benefits she and her family will have if they move to the America. To convey his persuasion Downe reflects his strategies through emotional appeals also called pathos, and repetition to show the advantages of his wife to make such am important move. Downe left England to travel to America in pursuit of a more wealthy life to his family. In his letter he emphasizes America’s qualities to get his wife to come to live to America with him.
Ernest Hemingway was born into the conservative suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, a town he later went on to describe as ‘full of wide lawns and narrow minds’ (Tiebert, 2007, page 240). When America joined World War One, Hemingway saw that as an opportunity to leave Oak Park, but he could not fulfil the medical requirements due to his poor eyesight and was deferred. He went on to join the volunteer ambulance service, travelled Europe and returned home in 1919. It it thought that Hemingway could not bear to be back in Oak Park after travelling the world. Soon after this he gained literary success and he met his first wife, Hadley Richardson, and they moved to Paris in 1921.
