Fracking – Aff. My partner and I are here to debate that fracking should be legalized in New York. According to BBC News, fracking is a process in which a hole is drilled deep into the ground, and then thousands of gallons of a water mixture are pumped into the well at high pressures, causing the shale in the ground to crack, opening up fissures. These fissures are held open by sand particles to enable natural gas to flow up the well. The resulting natural gas is used to power homes and cities. Fracking, and the natural gas it produces, will benefit New York in three distinct ways. The first is that the oil produced will benefit the U.S.’s economy by lessening the energy dependence that it has with foreign countries. Secondly, the…show more content…
This means that legalizing fracking will create many jobs for the citizens of New York, further boosting the economy. IHS Global Insight estimates that in 2008, total natural gas production supported more than 2.8 million jobs in the United States, and increasing the development of our nation's unconventional sources of gas alone will add more than 1.4 million U.S. jobs by 2015. The fracking industry will also help support other industries, including the steel industry. Legalizing fracking will create many new jobs in New York, not only in the direct managing of the plants, but in the manufacturing of the drills and the transportation of the natural gas as well, leading to a sharp rise in the state and national…show more content…
The recent boom in natural gas production in the United States contributed to a 3.8 percent drop in carbon emissions in 2012. Legalizing fracking can help drive this number higher, reducing greenhouse gases and improving the environment. And the methane that is created during natural gas production is not as large a threat as other energy sources currently being used. A report published in Science concludes that the United States’ natural gas production system currently isn’t leaking enough methane to make it a worse fuel for the climate than coal. Therefore, fracking will reduce American dependence on foreign oil and as a result stabilize the economy. It will also create more jobs, and legalizing fracking in New York will create a boost to the economy that will spread across the US, and lastly, the environmental advantages that natural gas creates will help to reduce greenhouse gases and reduce the dependence on coal and petroleum. For these reasons, and many others, legalizing fracking in New York is the most advantageous choice, for the state, the country, and the
