Steinbeck has mentally and emotionally on purpose created two completely opposite characters. We get the sense that George is a parental figure towards Lennie as when George asks Lennie, do you remember where we’re going now? Lennie “looked startled and then in embarrassment hid his face against his knees”, ” I forgot again”. This enables us to understand Lennie’s obliviousness, he doesn’t even remember where he’s going, and he must follow George as though he is his ‘daddy’. Although Lennie is ashamed of his self and ‘embarrassed’ as he “hid his face against his knees”, he has respect for George and is sorry to disappoint him.
According to a Turkish Proverb, “A good companion shortens the longest road.” This companion is someone who must truly believe in and help the other individual accomplish his or her dream. In John Steinbeck’s classic novel, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses Crook’s segregation from society, Curley’s dysfunctional marital relationship, and George’s responsibility to care for Lennie, to show that the absence of a healthy relationship will prevent one from pursuing their dream. First, Crook’s dream is to feel a sense of belonging, and segregation denies him the ability to find a relationship that will help him achieve a status comparable to whites. Feeling left out, Crooks comments, “I ain’t wanted in the bunk house… ‘Cause I’m black. They
Genevieve Clay’s Tropfest short video Be My Brother (2009) epitomises the notion that connection is moulded by cultural attitudes, as well as exemplifying belonging as ultimately being a choice through the social interaction and sheer will of the marginalised protagonist Richard. Through his social interaction, Richard creates a relationship that fosters understanding and acceptance, allowing him to effectively challenge his initial ostracism based on prejudicial criteria. Initially, Richard is rejected by Amanda which conveys the cultural bias as she views him as a misfit. The body language of Amanda depicts her unwillingness to converse with Richard as an outcome of the stereotypes associated with Richard’s condition. Her body movements are a metaphor that represent society turning on the idea of treating disabled people with equality. The wide shot at the bus shelter highlighting the distance between Amanda and Richard, further symbolises Richard’s distance and dejection from society.Consequently, Richard is tasked with the struggle of developing a relationship between himself and someone society views as being on the other side of the social spectrum.
* Underestimated by some people, he is crafty, not as childlike as some people think. (p31) Quotes. * He portrays a innocent character, easily upset and hurt(p26+99) * Steinbeck shows Lennie’s character through the language he uses (foreshadowing – when talking about when they lost their last job p29, girl, mouse, dead dog – preparing you, ripple affect), how other people describe him, (appearance, actions) * He looks for guidance from George and depends on him (p90) links to his mental disability. * American Dream – George’s story (bottom of p31)Separated by mental capacity. Why does Steinbeck present him in this way?
During their time together, George did his best to protect Lennie as his aunt had asked. The two traveled around, ever in search of jobs. Although it was because of Lennie that they could not keep jobs for more than short periods of time, George stuck by Lennie through everything. Even though George felt responsible for the wellbeing of Lennie, he, understandably, felt
In doing so, we see how essential not only it is for Lennie to gain another friend in times of loneliness, but for Crooks as well. Being secluded from companionship like Crooks is, he becomes dependent on Lennie for moments like those to remind him that he is still a human being. Lennie, like George, also doesn’t want to risk losing a friend over something minor. When Lennie wanted some ketchup and he saw that he made George angry by continuously asking for what they don’t have, he immediately apologized and said “I wouldn’t eat no ketchup, George. I’d leave it all for you.
`Cause I want you to stay with me"'. This argument between George and Lennie means that George wants Lennie to stay with him because George knows that Lennie would not be able of living on his own and George sees Lennie as his responsibility although sometimes it can be difficult and uncomfortable for
If he lets himself get out of control so much that he hates someone, then his inner self and soul breaks down or degrades. This means that overall everyone’s opinion does matter and mean a lot, but how you approach it is what matters most. Quote 2: Success is not really success if you haven’t succeeded past any obstacles to get to that sussessful life. “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” Booker T. Washington was telling his readers how he felt through the voice of this quote. This says to me a lot to myself and teach me a lesson.
In "Through the Tunnel," by Doris Lessing, the author uses settings and complex characters to establish that discovering one's own identity can be a truly harsh experience. In the case of the protagonist Jerry, he wants acceptance from his peers and to be in control of his life, but his harsh reality is that he still wants to stay with his mother because she is all he has. Jerry learns that identity is given to you from those around you, not something you establish on your those around you, not something you establish on your own. The symbols play a important role in the story as Jerry ventures from the security of the safe beach to the unknown parts of the wild bay. The story begins with a description of Jerry's mother carrying a bright striped purse.
This is demonstrated by, “…then he looked ashamedly at the flames.” This technique illustrates that George is going to feel repentant about what he has said and will try to make up for it. It also might be said that the character George feels guilty on what he has done and will try and redeem himself. This is noted in the novel when George says, “Aw Lennie.” The effect upon the reader is that George is shamefaced and will try to make his friend Lennie feel better by offering other choices which he could do In conclusion, I think this essay shows that George is easily aggravated and a cautious character. This is demonstrated by, “Lennie. You gonna be sick like you was last night.
