WRITE-UP Stage 5: Ages 13-18: Identity vs. Role Confusion Introduction: My youngest subject was Matthew Michael Pringle who is 13. He is my brother, and I chose to interview him because he felt comfortable being interviewed when I approached him. In addition, I was curious to discover what his answers would be asked the various questions knowing that this was his first interview. According to Erickson’s stages of social development, Matthew would be categorized in Stage 5 (Identity vs. Role Confusion). Questions/Answers: *(Q&A) When asked what you like and dislike most about his age, he responded: “now considered a teenager;” is old enough to see PG-13 movies without parental guidance; he is old enough to make decisions; and now has multiple teachers versus a single one in elementary school. However, he is unable to drive a car or a “Vespa;” he doesn’t have his own room; he is not treated like the average person, but rather a kid; can’t go anywhere by himself; and “that people have their own groups in school.” Regarding Matthew’s psychological development based from his answers, he displays no indication that he must fit in with a particular identity. Rather, the only confusion he has is why people have groups (at all) that in order to join, you must be of their particular standards. *(Q&A) When asked who is/are the most important person/people in your life he responded: “My family because they have been with me all my life. They protect me and teach me about life in the real world.” His answer reveals that rather than his peers being those that he has the significant relationship with, it’s his family. Matthew feels that it’s important to maintain fidelity with his family instead of his friends because they are the ones that he has a significant relationship with. *(Q&A) When asked
