In a paragraph, discuss how these three essays meet the criteria for literary nonfiction. Use specific information from the content of the unit and quotations from the readings. Literary nonfiction is a form of storytelling as old as the telling of stories. It is a form that allows a writer both to narrate facts and to search for truth, blending the empirical eye of the reporter with the moral vision. The first essay written by Jaschik meets the criteria for literary nonfiction because it discusses the huge controversy of plagiarism and how it affects literature today.
It is an umbrella term, associated with many types of disciplines outside the historical realm, and can be segregated into an explanation of national identity or the archival support in the background. On top of this, all of the authors agree that memory and history are interdependent. They are able to question and enhance each other because of the opposite natures. As such, it can be guaranteed that historians of this generation are subject to the subjectivity of the memory-history relationship. Analyse the ways history and memory generate compelling and unexpected insights. In your response, make detailed reference to your prescribed text and at least ONE other related text of your own choosing. History and memory are both multifaceted ideas that are challenged continually. History is often perceived as fact, in the recount of an event or retelling of a story that did in fact, take place. Since “The Things They Carried” is a collection of short stories, it automatically has multiple meanings. For some the meaning may simply be viewed as a novel of one’s life during the Vietnam War, but it is in fact much more than that. This novel explores such topics as: love, war, relationships, and the reality of the things that not only the characters but we too carry. These meanings are not direct but after reading can be discovered. Author O’Brian also confuses the reader by writing his novel as if everything that was told took place in the real world. For example, just by saying “this is true” (64) doesn’t always make it true. O’Brian leaves it up to the reader to distinct what they see the story as: reality or fiction. It is said that “a true war story… makes the stomach believe” (74). Through Diaz’s writing in Drown we were able to see how the lack of chorological order made things shift around a bit for the reader, for instance the book began with the story Ysrael. Andrés Martinez AP Lang Michels October 30th, 2014 Genre of In Cold Blood In cold blood is said to be a nonfiction novel in the standards of most library's, but many people out there disagree with this decision and say it is more of a fiction novel. The arguement is solely based on the stylistic choices Capote used in order to engage reaaders into this novel.
