In this paper I am hoping to give a simple but informative critique of this epic speech and to show how Martin Luther King puts great emphasis on powerful phrases that would be life changing to many lives. “I Have a Dream” is one of the most memorable an influential speeches of all time. The words of the phrases of this speech, would be emphasized through anaphora. Anaphora is repeating words at the beginning of neighboring clauses, a commonly used rhetorical device. Repeating the words twice sets the pattern more repetitions emphasize and increase the rhetorical effect. I believe the use of that rhetorical device helped to really set his words into peoples minds an hearts. The repeating of words in this speech only gave them greater meaning maybe he even did so it makes a person realize something he is trying to say, something important that’s not being heard yet. Using emphasis through repetition makes the phrases more memorable. August 28th, 1963 one of the most influential figures, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. took stand on the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. to give the historical “”I Have a Dream”” speech. Dr. King’ gave this speech as a public plea for peace and equality among all people of the nation. King comments not only on controversial topics, but expresses his opinion without being offensive or getting violent with his words. King's appeal as a civil rights activist, and overall human being is attributed to his unique way of empowering people through communication.
