Victor Hugo, renowned leader of the French Romantic Movement, who sought freedom from the conservative restrictions of classical style, once said “there is one thing stronger than all the world’s armies and that is an idea whose time has come”. Ideas are the unifying factors relating to innovation, technology and entrepreneurship which will enable us to create a golden future. This paper will focus specifically on the golden future as it relates to the University of Technology, Jamaica; however, the concepts and ideas expressed could be applied to other institutions or to the wider society. Many of today’s organizations are battling the tensions between enhancing continuous improvement, creating distinctiveness and stimulating the changes needed to ensure future success. The golden future that I look forward to is one which is characterized by continuous improvements in innovations, technological advancement and the creation of entrepreneurial ventures. The golden future of University of Technology, Jamaica, (UTech) will benefit all stakeholders: students, faculty, administration and the general public alike, so much so that it will attract international attention. It will be a future where our students are encouraged to write and research ingeniously. One where our members of faculty are chief consultants in their areas of specialization. A future where students’ queries are processed promptly and student records databases will be more accessible. A future where faculties work in tandem with private sector entities and the government. A future where this university is the powerhouse of new inventions, development of new technologies and a breeding ground for entrepreneurial minds The future I have just painted may at first glance seem fantastical but will become a reality only if we start to lay the foundation for this to happen now.
