The department of fisheries always had someone watching Fusi row out to the net, but Fusi believed they still couldn’t catch him. The third enemy of Fusi in the story is his own age. His age restricts him from getting a fishing license so he is able to fish legally. His age also makes people such as Emma think that he is too old to be fishing and controlling his own life. Fusi tries to ignore the fact that he is 70, and keeps going in spite of all the people against him.

Santiago said this as he struggled to catch the fish.It is clear that Santiago is mentally and physically drained .This means that if you have to give your life why not do it fishing. This proves how much it really means to him.Most people in their twenty's would not even do this work that is this hard, and he is also an old man.
He is really upset about his mother and his uncle, but also his father dying. His way of coping with his thoughts about them is to act suicidal, “His canon ‘gainst self-slaughter!” (I ii 132). Even though he doesn’t want to live anymore and is thinking about suicide he thinks about it and realizes that he can’t kill himself because it is a sin. No matter how depressed and how much he doesn’t want to live, he still considers whether it is a good thing or bad thing to do. Aside from Hamlet’s depression, he shows that he is very determined and brave.

The tone expressed is miserable and fretful due the men’s fear that they will drown in the sea. This tone is involved throughout the passage telling the readers that they have not yet reach safety on land and are using all their energy to keep the dinghy afloat. In the extract she is used as a metaphor to represent the dinghy. The author builds up the power of the sea and the tough situation the men on the boat are in, mostly in the beginning of the passage.
