2. Compare the reasons for World War One and Two. Were these wars caused by a combination of failure of diplomacy and militarism/militant racism/nationalism or legitimate grievances among nations? When examining the causes of the two World Wars, it is important to realize that World War Two was a direct result of World War One. The causes of the second World War are easily traceable to the first World War, especially in the European theatre. Germany was decimated by the treaty of Versailles, and was essentially humiliated in European relations. As a result of the costs piled on to Germany as a result of Versailles, and the disarmament of its military, Germany was in a serious depression. It is an observed historical pattern that when a country is in bad economic pattern such as a depression or recession, there tends to be a shift to the conservative right. Germany was no exception and a far right nationalist, and militant, leader came to power. Hitler gained popularity by rearming Germany and beginning economic recovery. After the recovery began, he started to use racist rhetoric and the idea of an Aryan master race to begin military expansion into neighboring countries. Hitler succeeded in joining forces with Mussolini’s fascist party in Italy and had near complete control of Europe after a series of invasions. Hitler was arguably only stopped because he betrayed his non aggression pact with Russia and ended up losing a huge amount of men and resources in operation Barbossa. Japan is another clear example of racist, nationalist, militaristic, and expansionist tendencies causing the second World War. Japanese society has always been a society ruled by the ideals of the warrior, how those ideas translate into real life is a subject of much debate.
