Lies My Teacher Told Me By: James W. Loewen Report By: Ethan Daniels "Lies My Teacher Told Me" a book written by Professor James W. Loewen gives students an understanding of the past of the United States, and how knowing this could effect our future. Twelve of the most popular and widely used American history textbooks are included in this novel. Loewen uncovers the flaws, lies, and bias the textbooks present. There are two main ideas that come to mind while reading this book. The first is the bais that is show in American History textbooks, and the second is historiography, or the study of the development of how history is written.
Crooks isn’t ashamed about his inheritance but has pride and tells Lennie he doesn’t descend from slaves but from landowners. In several points, in the book Steinbeck shows Crooks’s dignity and pride when he ‘draws himself up’ and will not accept charity from anyone. As the novel goes on we see that Crooks accepts things the way they overall are. Crooks doesn’t talk to the other men and they don’t talk to him. This causes the greatest amount of loneliness in Crooks out of all the characters. When Crooks states “I tell ya a guy get to lonely an he gets sick” ( Steinbeck; 73). This quote shows that rejection can cause most people to become crazy, as it did to Crooks.
In 186O, the rights of voting and to have jury duty were very limited to those of color. In the New England region, all but one state had allowed male suffrage. However, it was vice versa for jury duty. In the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest regions, male suffrage and male jury duty wasn’t permitted under any circumstance Women didn’t even have rights to vote or hold office. Although black men had some rights, not many were allowed to them.
The Handmaid’s Tale is a novel that should be read by all Literature teaches us many things about life as it questions us about who we are, what we might become, what this world is, and how we might change it for the better. The Handmaid’s Tale is an excellent piece of literature to read because it questions readers of the world they live in. It opens our eyes to a new world in which we live in and shows us how ignorant we are. One should read The Handmaid’s Tale because the author, Margaret Atwood, uses the novel to teach her readers about this world we find ourselves in and how we could change it for the better by using Utopia and Dystopia, the negative aspects when we lean towards fundamentalism, as well as life lessons. Margaret Atwood uses Utopia and Dystopia to show and warn her readers of the world we live in, and what it can become.
Bad Books are good? There are several lessons that the new readers always get from reading some kinds of books. In his essay, “On Writing,” author Stephen King illustrates his different opinion from reading the books: “Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (367). The author believes that reading bad books can take some positive points for the growing writer after he reads a lot of kinds of different books. That issue is the result why he thought like that kind of strange.
Having an imagination is necessary to get deeper in the story, and a good memory is also required to tie the pieces of the story together. And of course an artistic sense to appreciate the beauty of the author’s writing. Nabokov states “Since the master artist used his imagination in creating his book, it is natural and fair that the consumer of a book should use his imagination too.” The reader needs to also understand and appreciate the language used by the author. He needs to pay attention and notice the details in a novel and not just the general storyline. He needs to read with an open mind regardless of other people’s judgment of the novel.

Neither understands having though, passion, feeling, or emotion in life. The Myth of Sisyphus helps explain some of the meaning of some of the events taking place in The Stranger. In The Stranger the main character Meursault takes life for granted in a way of not enjoying it. He seems more satisfied with the usual as if no excitement lives in his life. The death of his mother doesn’t even bother him so show sadness.
