A. Write an essay in which you argue for or against making the novel you have studied a compulsory part of the English course? There are many books that are used in English courses, but one of the books that I think should be compulsory for our year group is Of mice and men by John Steinbeck. This novel shows us the importance of relationships and how it is still relevant in today's society. It educates us about the 1930s in America, in an interesting way, as we cannot go back and see it for ourselves. We see how people were really treated in the 1930's and what they had to go through in that time. This text has great ideas and issues that we understand when reading it and that's why I think it is a great book that people should read. This is shown through Crooks, as I think that he is one of the loneliest people in the book. Crooks is the only black person in the novel, so he is usually not allowed to be in the same places as the white people. Also he has his own room so his has nobody to talk to and the white people don’t usually come up to him and talk. A way that this is shown through the book is when Crooks says “You got George. You know he’s going to come back. S’pose you didn’t have nobody... a guy needs somebody.” We hear the sadness in Crooks’ tone and we know that he doesn’t have anybody. Crooks is a great example of what it is like if a person does not have anybody and they are lonely. This issue in the book is still relevant in today’s society as there is this fear about being alone and having no one.
