Female Soldiers on the Front Line Currently, women in the military are not allowed to serve on the front lines of battle and I agree with this decision. On television you see the commercials with the slogan “Anything you can do I can do better.” Maybe some women can be better soldiers than some men, but that doesn't mean that women should be allowed to be on the front lines during battle. Putting a woman on the front lines of battle with men will compromise the mission. Men are human and will go out of their way to protect a woman, even if it costs him his life. And, until our country is ready to treat a captured, raped, tortured and mutilated female soldier just like a man, women should not be placed on the front lines of battle.
She questions people to think about the existence of discrimination in our society what sometimes is lured that: “women are already equal”. Also, she demands the government about the laws to protect not only women but those working people who do not get the chance to speak up. With the purpose of informing the audience, the composer uses statistics what add to the factuality and authenticity of the text. The second text I want to recommend is “In my own words”, a beautiful article about one of the greatest women in Australia, Ruby Hunter, an Aboriginal singer, songwriter whose music dealt with her personal history, Indigenous
Women need to realize without them our society and world could not go on. Therefore they do not need to risk their health for us, when there are other people that would do that instead of them. Women being women, and fighting in combat, the men they are fighting against feel like they are an easy target and could easily capture them and take them for hostage. Women are weaker than men by genetics they would not be able to fight back and defend themselves. Women would always need a man there to protect themselves.
If a woman has conducted the same amount and level of training as any other man in the special forces, why should her potential be cut short simply because a woman has never fought on the front line before? The women eager to fight in battle are aware of the consequences and wish to be given the same opportunities as men but due to the conservative view of many, are being held back from serving Australia. Defence minister Stephen Smith has acknowledged this issue as “ too much of a cultural change for some to handle”, however he is in full backing of the shift to equal rights amongst men and women in combat. He then continues to say that “All roles on the frontline will be determined on the basis of merit, not on the basis of sex” So the real question is, who is holding this official change in history back? The government, due to statistics showing that on average more women around the world die in combat than men, believed to be caused
English 101 16 May 2011 Female Athletes: Challenging Stereotypical Gender Roles In the American society, there are specific gender roles which people are encouraged to follow. The male is associated with power and dominance which they can express through sport. On the other hand, the female is associated with beauty, grace and submissiveness. These female characteristics might satisfy the gender norms of society, but they go against the qualities that a female athlete must embrace. While the female athlete receives some positives through their participation in sport, their abilities are constantly being downplayed in order to emphasize their femininity.
Elaine also mentioned that army’s own surveys, 90 percent of enlisted women have said they oppose involuntary combat assignments on the same basis men. Elaine approaches that even if physical capabilities were objectively measured and equal, co-ed combat assignments would affect discipline and unit cohesion. I feel in combat that they need to train the women and men the same if they are going to be on the same team and that’s when equality should come in and train them as one. In my mother’s opinion she agrees with Elaine that women shouldn’t be in combat because of medical issues and that will slow the team down and that dogs can smell women when they are on their minstrel
In Australia some of the highest paid athletes are football players while female sports do not get paid as much. Sponsorships given to athletes form a large part of their earning, major companies would rather support those athletes that are most popular and successful. Many professional athletics approve that women deserve equal prize money because they just work as hard as men. Women deserve equal prize money because women are as capable and valuable as men and they should be treated as such and the Equality has been written into law many times and is an important social value that is taught in school, media and most homes from early childhood so they deserve equal prize money for sports. They also believe that they should get paid equal prize money because males and females are just the same but if they judge them regarded to racial, gender or otherwise it’s called discrimination.
Tokenism and Women’s Promotion in the Entertainment Business Tokenism is preventing women’s promotion in the entertainment industry. Tokenism in the workplace has been an issue for women ever since women started working in male-dominated jobs. This is also seen in the entertainment industry where it is also a male dominated sector and women are being tokens in expense of their gender and desire to be an artist. But, when women are being chosen for the same roles, the same sound and look, their opportunities for promotion are being prevented tremendously, limiting them to do only certain jobs. Media is how we change the view of the world and when women are constantly generalized and understated as such, not only are the women who are in the entertainment industry are affected, but so is the way the society looks at women is.
This has been a long maintained perception in a conservative country like ours which mentions that women do not fit in the non-traditional jobs, like in police, army, or in engineering. However, it has been a bit opposite lately since women are actually stepping forward to prove the perception wrong. As a person born and living in this country, I admit it is still a bit hard to prove show that the view is wrong, but still, I think women should definitely take up non-traditional jobs to prove the ability to stand equally in the society with men. Conservative people often say, “Women are only to be nurtured and kept inside the house, so that they can manage the household and the family, and men are to earn the money to support it.” For a long time it had been maintained so strictly that women were not even allowed to study for higher education. Conservative people still say that women do not need to go earning as men are there for it.
Despite all the strides made by women as a group over time, they are kept out of politics because our political system is biased against women: the male gender is favored for leadership roles even from a young age, the way the current system of politics is set up caters to men and puts female candidates at a disadvantage, and the sexism that is deeply engrained in our social system thrives in politics, making biases blandly expectable and without notice to the common citizen. When viewing the statistics it’s obvious to see that the male gender is favored, and women are grossly under-represented when it comes to leadership roles in society. According to Fiorina, this un-proportionate representation is not due to “gender prejudices” but rather that women lack “the art of politics” (Fiorina, 331). Indeed, women as a whole haven’t been on the political scene nearly as long as men have in United States, but the lack of women in power is not due to them being under-qualified, but rather the bias to prefer men in positions of power is created by a system in which a role for leadership is molded around the nurtured characteristic of a male and disfavor those of a female. The inherit traits that tend to go with leadership are confidence
