WOMEN IN THE MARINE CORPS Society has changed over the years and has now accepted women in the military service as well as other “male Dominated” professions. Fifty years ago the role of women in the Marine Corps was just support. Fortunately, the Marine Corps has changed their opinion from society’s views. Over the past twenty years the Marine Corps has transitioned from a male dominated force to a multi-faceted military organization. The Marine Corps is a product of society and the beliefs of the American people. The young men and women in the Marine Corps today are a great representation of today’s society. Both dynamic and intelligent, today’s youth are very hungry for the knowledge required to succeed in all endeavors. Long ago, there was large opposition for America’s female youth being part of the military. However, current day Marine Corps deployments have changed that. The Marine Corps has embraced all members of their service openly and fairly. There is no doubt women Marines are doing more today then ever before both in their primary Military Occupational Specialties and their day-to-day duties. Never before has the United States faced such a large-scale deployment as they have during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. This is proven by countless mission debriefs and daily observations that women Marines are ready to do the same jobs as their male counterparts. Females Marines bring a tremendous amount of positive influence to the table. One of the largest gender differences with women and men is physical strength. From my fifteen years of experience, female Marines make up for these physical shortcomings by their strong mental prowess. Male Marines generally accept their female counterparts as equals and as fellow Marines. The majority of the male Marines I have under my charge enjoy working with female Marines. When a new
