Woe to the nerd, an archetype created by mankind to socially reject people, pinned down with characteristics that may derive from only one aspect of your personality. There are two types of nerds, each with their own aspects that pin the nerd down as the common caricature. This picture, wrongfully painted by society, is portrayed as a person who is “physically weak and unattractive, poorly dressed, and ha[s] poor posture” (Smiler 625). Shall then, society pity the nerd? No, nerds don’t need society and this paper will show people exactly why nerds are just as fine as they are. The loved jock is someone who likes to fight first and ask questions later because after the rise of romanticism, you were a coward if you did not fight (Nugent 34-35). The nerd however cannot fight, which forces them to think of alternative solutions to their problems; and “contemplativeness and powerlessness can easily be linked” (Jones 44). Because thinking and logical problem solving is a common trait of the nerd, they are also characterized as someone who is academically able. They are pictured as someone who is pictured as that cold, unemotional machine that I mentioned earlier. Society fails to realize that everyone can be emotional but not everyone can be smart. This gap between intellectuals and unintelligent people, makes it impossible for outsiders to see the beauty in logical thought. Another result of nerds having a logical way of thinking is their tendency to have more moral fiber than other people. Because nerds are logical and think in a structured manner, nerds are much more likely to consider the consequences of their actions rather than a jock. As I mentioned earlier, jocks have reported high numbers in alcohol consumption. Contrary to the jock, the nerds have “reported low levels of alcohol [use]… tended to associate with peers who did not take risks, and participated in prosocial extracurricular activities” (Smiler 625) They are focused on the road to success,…show more content…
For the sake of friendship we became interested in what the other person liked. This allowed us to make inside speculations and jokes that outsiders could not understand. Yes this made our social status even lower, but we still had our friendship, and that is all that mattered to us. As Nugent says, nerds come together to heal their social wounds. They find “warmth” in an alternate reality, called interests. Being nerdy about these interests is esteemed rather than frowned upon.
