University of Phoenix Material Week One Practice Problems Prepare a written response to the following questions. Chapter 1 12. Explain and give an example for each of the following types of variables: a. Equal interval: Is the numeric variable in which differences between values correspond to differences in the underlying thing being measured (Aron et al., 2013). In other words if the difference between two successive categories are the same then they are an equal interval. a. Ex: researcher would be able to measure the degree of the weather, whether using Celsius or Fahrenheit, the difference between a temperature of 46 and 42 is the same as the difference between 72 and 68 b. Rank-order: The numeric variable in which values correspond to the relative position of things measured (Aron et al., 2013). These types of variables allows data to be compared to one another. a. Ex: the size of T-shirts (S, M, L, XL, etc.), the position of people within a company, and even ranking the establishments within the same business category c. Nominal: The variable in which the values are categories (Aron et al., 2013). This allows the researcher to compare the differences between the items or subjects. a. Ex: our political parties (during voting season or not) to even the different types of hair color. d. Ratio scale: Where an equal-interval variable is measured on a ratio scale if it has an absolute zero point, meaning that the value of zero on the variable indicates a complete absence of the variable (Aron et al., 2013). Because the variables are measured at an absolute zero point, it allows the researcher to make the statement that on object has twice the length of another (or twice as long). a. Ex: Some examples of this would be a person’s age, weight, height, and even the time it
