Windshield Survey University of Phoenix Healthy Communities: Theory and Practice NUR 405 Willesden Billie Walkerschmucker April 29, 2012 Windshield Survey Community It is a group of people who, regardless of the diversity of their cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds, communicate appropriately, and work together to achieve the same goals. According to “Dictionary.com” (2012), a community is “A social, religious, occupational, or other group sharing common characteristics or interests and perceived or perceiving itself as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which it exists (usually preceded by the): the business community; the community of scholars” (Community). Torrance is a city located close to the beach with many parks, playgrounds with equipment and also baseball fields and tracks. Children are observed playing, lighting in the parks is adequate, and traffic signs are appropriate. The beach is nice and clean; bathhouse facilities and public parking are well kept with lifeguards on duty. Some people are found running and exercising around the beach. Boundaries. The town is surrounded by beach cities. Freeway 405 goes directly through the city. Railroad tracks wind around the outside town. Nearby neighborhoods are Harbor Gateway, Hollywood Riviera, North Torrance, Old town, Southeast Torrance, Walteria, West Torrance, and Wilmington. Torrance is a 21 square miles area between Los Angeles and Orange Counties by the Pacific Ocean on the west ("The Torrance Advantage", 2011). Some neighborhoods have names and some stand-alone. Commons. There are approximately 46 parks with recreation amenities in Torrance, all open to the community. There are few nightclubs, a racquet club, YMCA, and a downtown that provides access to grocery shopping and regular shopping. There are two big malls, few community health clinics and the city hall. Some billboards are located close to the business and newly developed areas. Torrance also has its city cable in channel 3, which provides weekly news. Some posters are noted on the sides of the streets to provide advertisement. Service Centers. There is one police station located at the city hall, and six fire stations equally distributed through the city. Torrance PD is constantly patrolling throughout the city. According to “The Torrance Advantage” (2011), “City programs, non-profit groups and businesses provide a variety of services, exciting events and activities in which residents can participate and enjoy. Its accessibility to Los Angeles and Orange counties, and its own beach and parks satisfy one's need for relaxation and adventure” (para. 1). Race and Ethnicity. There are a variety of races and ethnicities in the city of Torrance. Mainly Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians were noted on observation. Religion and Politics. Many churches are noticed, almost on every block. There are churches for every specific ethnicity and religion. Observed about 20 Christian churches and approximately 25 Catholic churches. No evidence was observed of current political activities, this region is predominantly republican.
