William Howard Taft “Don't worry over what the newspapers say. I don't. Why should anyone else?” This quote was by a man who believed that newspaper criticism meant nothing; this “man” was William Howard Taft, the 27th president of the United States from 1909 through 1913. Depending on the person, four years can either go by as fast as a blink of an eye, or even as slow as a 300 pound man. This 300 pound man unfortunately went by countless nicknames along the lines of “Big Bill”, “Willy”, and even “Big Chief”. Right off the bat, an obvious description can be taken from these nicknames – Taft was a fat man. The question should actually be: why am I focusing so much on these meaningless nicknames? Sadly, one of the only reasons that Taft even made his way to up the political ladder was because he had political connections through his father. When a reporter informed him he was no Teddy Roosevelt, Taft replied that his goal was to "try to accomplish just as much without any noise"- Now what sort of president would settle for doing whatever it takes with no “noise”? He wanted no attention and no recognition to his terms in presidency. Most importantly, Taft had surrounded himself with conservative businessmen who shared his love for golf and recreation at fine resorts; time Taft took golfing, could have been time spent improving the country. His new business associates isolated Taft from the progressive followers of Roosevelt who had supported his election. By isolating himself from Roosevelt supporters, Taft eventually lost all supporters. After his presidency flew by, Taft concluded his terms with an appalling statement, "I do not remember that I was ever President". Though he carried on some of Roosevelt's policies, Taft got into increasing trouble with the progressive wing of the party and displayed mounting irritability and
