Exploring the Organ Systems Unit 4 Individual Project SCIE206 – Biology AIU – Online By: Vanessa Duffman May 23, 2012 Abstract In this paper, it will discuss how organ systems work together and how organ systems are connected with the case study of atherosclerosis. Also this paper will discuss why atherosclerosis would result in a heart attack and how are arteries different from veins and capillaries. This paper will also explain the advantage of having a closed circulatory system over an open circulatory system. This paper will explain how the lymphatic system is associated with the circulatory system and will describe one disease that affects the lymphatic vessels similarly to the way that atherosclerosis affects the arteries.…show more content…
Atherosclerosis is a type of disease in the blood vessels, mainly in the arteries. Smoking, not exercising, and being overweight are lifestyles that people chose to live and in which can cause atherosclerosis. Damage to the human body like smoking, is when the atherosclerosis disease starts. (Words of Wisdom Biology, 2012) * Why would atherosclerosis result in a heart attack? Provide a brief explanation based on how the heart functions. Overtime when the fatty residues start building up on the arterial wall or this is called hardening of the arteries, this leaves little movement for the blood to flow through the arteries and to the heart. This blood is important because it contains oxygen and nutrients that are to go to the body’s tissues. If atherosclerosis begins in a coronary artery, blood is unable to flow correctly or not at all to the heart. This can cause the heart to stop pumping which then a person will endure a heart attack. (Words of Wisdom Biology, 2012) The heart is a muscle that is pumping blood 72 times a minute non-stop. The heart is protected by the pericardium, the ribs, the lungs, and
