However, this chemical has also been used to attack enemies during war, affecting people’s health as well as their quality of life. Agent Orange, herbicides which had been used for combat in wars. During the process of manufacturing this product, the American Cancer Society (2013) stated that Agent Orange was contaminated with dioxins. This was unintentional and the herbicide was only contaminated with small amounts. However, this small amount wasn’t given much attention before, which has now damaged millions of lives. During this war, the American military utilized defoliants, which are known chemicals causing the plant’s leave to fall. One of the defoliants used by the military is Agent Orange and the PR Newswire (“HDNet world report investigates the devastating effects of Agent Orange 30 years after the Vietnam War”, 2009) reported that it is included with the20 million gallons of other herbicides that they dropped in the jungles of the Vietnam. The concentration level of this defoliants reaches up to 50 times, and the effect does not only appear to be detrimental among trees. On his report, he featured Brian Driscoll’s, a New York City-based photographer, images of the children who were believed to be affected by Agent Orange as well as their health. These children aged 5 to 15 years old were all bed ridden while some were, deaf and blind. These people can be seen in various places in Vietnam and these affected individuals were not even directly exposed to Agent Orange, rather it’s the parents or even grandparents who are exposed on the most toxic chemical in the world and yet innocent lives are suffering the impact. Although the United States have not completely own the responsibility to address all the needs of the people suffering from different physiological impact of Agent Orange due to insufficient evidences that would support it as the root cause. The Department of Veterans Affairs decided to compensate the Vietnamese veterans who are exposed to this herbicide resulting to soft-tissue sarcoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and chloracne. They also compensated Vietnamese veterans who have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma porphyria cutaneatarda, respiratory cancers, and multiple myeloma (Committee to Review the Health Effects in Vietnam Veterans of Exposure to Herbicides, 1999).
