Why I Want to Be a Pharmacist

The Amazing Career of a Pharmacist Over the past four months or so, there have been many professions that have stuck out to me through the words of the speakers that have come into class and spoken about their professions. However, there is one profession that really stuck out to me, and this is a pharmacist. Pharmacy is a very growing career in terms of the number of jobs available and the amount of drugs there are in this country. Through the many different settings that a pharmacist may work in, and the advancements and opportunities that the profession presents, pharmacy is the one career that specifically stuck out to me at the completion of this course. Pharmacy is a rather interesting profession that takes many skills in order to be successful at the profession. When many people think of pharmacy, they think of a person who works at Walgreens or Target, and counts pills all day long. However, pharmacy is a much more interesting field than that, and there are many different types of pharmacists in the world today. The type of duties that a pharmacist has on a daily basis really depends on what type of pharmacist they are. For instance, there are decentralized and centralized pharmacists. A decentralized pharmacist will go around with the doctor in a hospital setting and help recommend drugs for the patients (Unger). On the other hand, a centralized pharmacist will work in the pharmacy getting prescriptions ready and overseeing to make sure the drugs are going to the correct patients in the hospital (Unger). Hospital pharmacy can sometimes be seen as less desirable for many pharmacists, as there is often less patient interaction and more of working in the basement pharmacy of a hospital.
