Paralegals and Math “Paralegals using math in different levels is not new in the field.” MM150-23: Survey of Mathematics - 1105B Jeanna Tiedemann February 12, 2012 The 1997 ABA definition of a paralegal is, "A legal assistant or paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible." Specific examples of assignments that are substantive legal work include drafting legal documents, performing legal research and analyzing the results and investigating facts and laws and applying them to the preparation of a case. They are responsible for dividing, appraising, and drafting property settlement agreements. They work on preparing calculations for the settlement, computing damages and updating and maintaining damage summaries. Litigation: Paralegals involved in litigation will use addition and multiplication to total medical bills, calculate damages and add up fees and costs. Probate and Estates: Paralegals in the probate field will draft inventories and estimate the value of estates. They will also calculate estate distributions using percentages. They may also maintain client’s financial records, deal out assets, and prepare accounting schedules. Paralegals working in estate and probate administrations are also responsible for keeping and maintaining financial records. Criminal Law: Paralegal in this field may work with expert witnesses in complicated white-collar cases to analyze financial data. They may be called upon to use addition and multiplication to calculate statutory deadlines and sentence
