The lessons that McNamara teaches can be viewed all throughout the course of history and should be used as a guideline for the future. Lesson One: Empathize with your Enemy i. Columbus’ Treatment of the Native Americans: The Native American people were drastically different than the explorers of the New World. They believed that nobody owned the land; the idea of land ownership didn’t exist in their eyes. Instead of recognizing the Native American World View, Christopher Columbus and his men took advantage of the Indians by enslaving them and subduing them with violence in an effort to acquire land and riches. Clearly, Columbus should have empathized with the Native Americans by respecting their values and negotiating through fair trade rather than violence and deceit.
Wilson claims that private enterprise will only worsen the situation of Native Americans. Their first stab at private enterprise, casinos, has caused a divide within the community; Traditionalists against casinos and Warriors supporting casinos. This ideological conflict has transformed into various violent conflicts, including arson and murder. Wilson predicts that as assimilation continues, so will conflict. While Wilson believes there is no need for Native Americans to assimilate, as it would in fact be worse if they did, Brodewich sees the need for Native
Assignment 4: Case 10-2 The Property Tax verses Habitat for Humanity Budget and Finance PAD 505 Professor Kristie Roberts Understanding how property taxes operate requires an understanding of the basic property tax rate equation because property taxes work differently from other major taxes. Most tax rtes change only with special legislative action and are not part of the annual legislative process- they are the portion of the fiscal system that is most strictly incremental, in the sense of small changes made to a permanent base (John Mikesell, 2010 Custom Edition, pg. 492). Property tax rate setting mechanics are conceptually straightforward. Rates are driven by the choices that local government makes in regard to the provision of government services within the limits of the tax base and other revenue resources available to them and the controls placed on them by their state governments.
The taxable gain is computed by deducting the acquisition costs (adjusted for inflation) and transfer costs from the selling price. Long-term capital gains are currently taxed at 15%. Short-term capital gains or gains realized within twelve months are taxed at ordinary income tax rates. CORPORATE TAXATION INCOME TAX Local corporations can be fully owned by foreign individuals. A minimum of three incorporators are needed to set up a local company, and at least one incorporator should be a Guam resident.
They were either pursuing a better life, new opportunities, or just running away from a political system. Here they found peace, tranquility and opportunity for advancement — the so-called” American Dream”. Illegal immigration is one of the most controversial issues in the United States, but the new the Arizona law has provoked intense debate from Texas to Montana, drawing support in several polls and generating rejection by major civil rights groups. That is, Americans are trying to correct unlawful immigration dilemma with laws that infringe people’s freedom, liberty and equality. Although the federal government stills working on the immigration reform, according to Arizona’s law, it is a state crime not carrying immigration documents.
This angered Latino groups pushing him to make good on past promises to reduce deportations of immigrants living illegally in the country. Since Obama decided to abandon the immigration crisis, Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, decided to take this situation into his own matters. He believes that our borders should not be open and vulnerable to exploitation by ruthless criminals. He is focused on making sure drug cartels and other criminals don’t get a free pass into Texas and the rest of the nation because our borders are unsecured. Rick Perry then later decided to send 1,000 guardsmen to the border to assist the Texas Department of Public Safety’s “Operation Strong Safety”.
Most jobs require drug testing, whether it’s annual or random, so why shouldn’t someone who is not working for their income also be drug tested? I don’t believe that this law should in any way be unjust or unethical. If anyone should think that this law would unethical, unfair or immoral, I ask them then how ethical, fair and moral is it for tax payers hard earned dollars be paying for someone else’s next
After all, their purpose is to protect America from other countries. With many Americans unaware of what is happening this proves that our border control policies are inadequate and are in need of our full attention. FBI assistant director Kevin L. Perkins went before the Homeland Security Committee March 11th, 2010
Adopting Different Voting Laws Every country is composed of different people and works in its own unique way. Every country has their own set of laws, which should be contributing to the betterment and stability of the people and the country as a whole. There are voting laws in every country, and every country’s law is different. Australian voting laws require every adult to vote in national elections. America does not have this type of law that makes it compulsory for every adult to vote in national elections.
Many Americans opposed the removal of the Native Americans and argued that they too had been civilized and should be allowed to remain on the homelands, specifically Davey Crocket. This was a valid point of debate for the Native Americans, although at this point the strength in numbers for the government were overwhelming compared to that of the Native Americans living on their homeland. On the other hand, some of the natives thought strategically about agreeing with the treaty because this would alleviate “white harassment”(Indian Removal, PBS). This shows the debate amongst the natives themselves, over the removal act, leaving some tribes divided and again assisting with the destruction of their
