Rick Reading Zombies are by far one of the most popular monsters that exist today. What makes these walking, unintelligent corpses so much more entertaining than werewolves or vampires? I believe that we are entertained by these monsters so strongly due to the fact that zombies are a very powerful representation of change. Everyone may not like change in certain situations, but we are all attracted to the unknown elements of it. We are drawn to things that we do not fully understand, and when something is altered there is always an element of the unknown present. Not only do zombies bring about a physical transformation, but they also alter society with their presence. One way that the undead represent change is through the human body being altered, violently at times. Obviously we are used to people being alive around us, and we are also accustomed to them not trying to devour us. Zombies, or whatever turns regular human beings into zombies, change that drastically. The essence of life leaves the human body for the most part, and a physical representation of death is all that is left. The change in the body’s appearance is obvious. Imagine that you are talking to your friend Jeffery about the previous episode of The Walking Dead when a zombie runs up to you, and tackles and bites your friend. You manage to kill the zombie, but not too long after that something is different about your friend, aside from the bite on his shoulder. Whether it be the blood coming from his mouth, the veins in his face pressing against the skin, or the lifelessness in his eyes, you can tell that whatever you once knew about Jeffery is gone. Now instead of telling you why Rick Grimes is his favorite character, he wants to eat you. While werewolves go through a transformation, we could easily relate the “wolf” aspect to just that, a wolf.
