In Romeo and Juliet, many people are to blame for the deaths of the two teenagers and the others who were killed. However, if the Prince was to punish just one person, I believe that he should punish Romeo. Romeo is impulsive, inconsistent in his feelings, and makes foolish choices. To start with, Romeo does not think about the consequences of his actions. After Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo feels that it is his responsibility to avenge his friend’s death. However, he doesn’t have the authority to determine Tybalt’s fate. If he had let the law take care of punishment, he would not have had blood on his hands and he would not have been sent into exile. This character flaw is shown in many other instances as well. Finally, Romeo’s decisions are frequently thoughtless. If Romeo had thought through his suicide plan, he would have discovered that there was a better solution than killing himself. He should have taken council with Friar Lawrence before he made such a rash decision which resulted in not only his death but also in Juliet’s death. As you can see, if the Prince were to hold someone accountable for everyone’s deaths he should blame Romeo. As Friar Lawrence says in Romeo and Juliet: "Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast.” If Romeo would have heeded this advice, he would not have killed Tybalt, Paris, himself, and indirectly, Juliet.
