Cole Kinsey Mr. Adams History 12 3 January 2012 Occupy Wall Street’s Potential Ray Kachel, a man in Seattle, lost both his parents and only had $400 in his bank account and could barely survive. He had skills in optical character recognition, transferring printed material into digital records for storage. He was then laid off from work. The economic system failed him ”when the recession hit” (Packer 32) even though he was trained and hard working. Someone facing the crisis that this man faced should have support from the government because it’s the government’s job to protect its citizens and support them if they cannot survive on their own. “Only a strong ruling entity—the state—will end the perpetual strife and provide security” (Hobbes 25). The members of Occupy Wall Street need to use powerful methods to get their point across and have a strong material impact. Having a strong material impact will show the government exactly what they want and how they want it done. Fortunately technology is helping them do this. The use of technology helps the movement show the world what OWS is about and what goes on during it. For example tweets, Facebook, MySpace, and Aim help attract other people to the movement. Sometimes important pictures and videos are uploaded on news websites such as the one about students in California being pepper sprayed. Technology allows people to see how the movement is escalating to a new violent pace or gaining broad based support. This media can be conservative and liberal because there is not a single side. Both political parties and everything in between use the technology. This is good because having both parties work together makes for a healthy movement and perhaps eventually a better run
