He feels bad for Gatsby for believing that he could recreate the past and take away the five years that separated him and Daisy. The last sentence is quoted “No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.” This quote from Nick summarizes how lonely Gatsby was without Daisy and his time spent away from her he would think of how everything can remain the same as it was before the war started. Although he finds out that even with all his meticulous planning to create the perfect scene it would never be like the times he had with her before he left for the
What had been going on in the hours in between? Police sergeant Jack Clemmons took the call. It was Dr. Ralph Greenson who was so agitated that Clemmons couldn't understand him. Everyone had a right to know the facts of their hero's passing, and everyone felt it differently. The Dallas Morning News headlined the following day "Kennedy Slain on Dallas Street" and gave few details to the actual assassination. Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president a few hours after Kenneday passed. The newspapers declared Johnson's speedy inauguration and he then released a statement of mourning for Kennedy as the thirty sixth president. Jake had the most taken from him in the war, his ability to have sex and his feeling of masculinity. No longer being an active soldier, Mike felt little focus and even less purpose in life because now he had nothing to live for but the wealth he was to inherit. Bill, who was lucky enough to walk away from the war physically unharmed, was emotionally taken back to a place of passiveness and compassion. Lady Brett was once in love with a man who died of dysentery during the war, taking away her first and only real love. Finally, we have Robert Cohn, who was never in the war at all, and that is how it affects him; he is ridiculed for not being a veteran among other things.

Despite Nick's close proximity to Gatsby, we do not see him in a speaking role until the third chapter which allows for Nick, and the reader, to get a vague background on him through gossip and rumors about his character. ''They say he killed a man once... They say he's a cousin or a nephew of kaiser Wilhelm's'' These rumors which shroud Gatsby's true self make him seem extraordinary yet mysterious and strange.

He is the main subject of gossip throughout New York, and Gatsby is a legendary celebrity before he is introduced in the book.
