Nathan Graham Mrs. Chenault Pre-AP English-7 5 February 2013 In F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates a fictitious peninsula that branches off Long Island. Through the eyes of Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald creates a third party view of the struggles between New Money and Old Money. In The Great Gatsby, Nick recalls the events that led up to the death of his friend, James Gatz, known by the alias Jay Gatsby. Nick is a middle class man, served in the war, and is trying to start selling bonds and stocks. He is the cousin of Daisy Buchanan, a Old Money woman, with a New Money personality. Gatsby had created a very large façade that he was the center of attention and that he had an endless number of friends, all in hope that Daisy would see this, and she what she left. He almost reached his goal, but it seemed that every time Gatsby took a step toward Daisy, he took two steps toward his death. Gatsby did end up dying, while waiting for Daisy; and as Nick looks back on his memories of Gatsby, he said, "He had come a long way to this blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it" (189). Gatsby had gotten very rich, and that wealth tricked him into believing that he had a chance to win Daisy over, but he did understand the love between Daisy and Tom. His obsession with Daisy only lead him to his death. Gatsby was killed by the husband of Tom's mistress. Nick oversaw the funeral, and invited all of his "friends". However, when the time came on a rainy day, nobody except Gatsby's father and man known as Owl Eyes, showed up. Nick said, "After that I felt a certain shame for Gatsby.." (177). Of all the people that claimed to be his friends and acquaintances, only one man, who hadn't even given his name showed up. This reminded Nick of the first time he went to a party at Gatsby's house, Nick said, " I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was the one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited--they went there." ( ) Of all the things Gatsby had done for these leaches of people, after he died, no one wanted to be associated with Jay Gatsby.
