He went mad. He believed that everyone was trying to kill him and take his throne as King. As a result, he started murdering everyone. Firstly, he ordered some murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance, because Macbeth saw Banquo’s ghost being crowned King. He succeeded to kill Banquo but failed to kill Fleance.
To begin, Macbeth is viewed as a brave and fearless man with very good military standing he is also viewed as a good leader. Macbeth is a good man at this point in the play but due to some prophecies that are made by, some crazy witches; he starts to betray his closest friends. Macbeth begins to plot against King Duncan, the man who just named him Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth realizes the costliness of killing the king and how his actions may damn him forever. Macbeth tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, That he cannot go through with it and she begins to question him, “When you durst do it, then you were a man; And, to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man” (Shakespeare I.VII.
He is a merciless king who kills all in his path to the throne of Scotland; this ambition leads to unnecessary violence towards others. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a courageous, battle proven hero. During the opening scenes of the play, the audience has no idea that such a change of character could happen. Macbeth is convinced into his first murder, being King Duncan, by his wife, Lady Macbeth. The devil, or the evil spirits, take up many disguises, one of which is through Lady Macbeth.
Due to this unrestrained burst of ambition, Macbeth turns to darkness and he begins to act on his thoughts even though when Banquo asks if he ever thinks about the witches’ prophecy, he denies it all. Although the prophecy the witches foresee in Macbeth’s future is news to him, he is shocked and astonished because he has already thought of becoming a king in the past. As the play progresses, Macbeth’s duplicity in character comes through; he is indecisive, guilty and he becomes the worst type of traitor because he goes against God by murdering King Duncan. Macbeth is a character who undergoes a transformation; he leaves his cocoon and morphs into a butterfly, an evil butterfly for that matter. Banquo, Macbeth’s character foil, is one great character.
If they had not told him that he would become king, he would not even imagine that. But since they did tell him, he received new ambition and greed to finally kill the king and become king himself. After he was firmly on the throne, he began to get scared that someone was after him and the throne. He went to the witches and received influence again. He received three apparitions, but of two types: one that stated that he was going to be killed by Macduff, and two that stated that he should not be scared, because he is going to be killed by someone that is not woman born, and before that happens a forest of trees has to walk.
Now in the play, Macbeth starts off as a loyal, courageous, stereotypical, drone like war hero but once a group of witches put this idea in his mind that he could become king, he starts spiraling downhill. For days he pondered whether to let nature take its course and let fate decide, or intervene and take matters into his own hands. He kills the King, takes the throne, but becomes paranoid and belligerent. Soon after this change, a rebellion forms who goes after him and kills him. William Shakespeare’s Macbeth showcases how one’s desires can change him, bring out the true primal instincts in a man; and as the play progresses, this change becomes quite evident.

Becoming a Monster In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth, a respected Scottish general with good morals, becomes victim to his wife’s devious plan for him to kill the king to become king. At first, Macbeth only kills those necessary to become king however progressively develops into a character that kills whoever inhibits him from getting to his goal. His shift from killing those with a purpose to killing whoever gets in his way shows his transition from a man easily tempted yet morally good at heart to a monster that is easily succumbed to power. This contributes to the overall theme that a man, when tempted, can become a power-hungry monster. It is evident that Macbeth was once good, or rather, more compassionate towards the beginning of the book.
Macbeth does kill the King and this is when his downfall begins . His good friend Banquo starts to be suspicious and Macbeth kills him without a second thought. Later he sees Banquo's ghost and he begins to go mad as so does Lady Macbeth and she commits suicide. Macbeth runs Scotland very badly and Duncan's son Malcolm comes to claim his throne. Macbeth’s actions are just as poorly chosen as the murder’s that commit the crime today. Macbeth killing anyone in his way is not a way to get to royalty. Succeeding by performing great expectations should be the way Macbeth would want to receive the glory of royalty. Macbeth is seen as good in the beginning of the play for helping his country in fighting against the Norwegian king wanting to harm his familiar surroundings. As the play goes on Macbeth becomes greedy after the mysterious visit of the three witches telling him he will become king.
