Several people experience horrific traumas in their life times. Some people are fortunate enough to overcome the stress and the emotional wounds marked on them; other can’t. For instance, in the novel When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka, the father undergoes Post Traumatic Stress disorder due to the trauma he experienced for the last four years. The father is taken away from his family by government officials late at night and brought to the station where he was interrogated by them, who believe he is a criminal. ‘He must be an undercover spy working for the Japanese Emperor Hirohito’. In chapter 5, the reader notices how compelled and over the edge the father is feeling when he talks to the government officials. Every sentence in chapter 5 pours out with sarcasm and angriness. Imagine being held captive for four years; being treated like a criminal for doing absolutely nothing! The father came back with PTSD. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder happens to people who have been under a lot of stress or after being through traumatic events in their life. The fathers being held captive inequity in an internment camp. "He never said a word to us about the years he's been away... He never talked about politics or how he had lost all teeth. A person who has post traumatic stress disorder cannot usually express their feelings in words and talk about their issues since it is a very sensitive topic, for most people. Many people are filled with confusion, feeling furious and can’t describe what they are going
