Lesson 2 Journal Entry Objective 1 1. I would guess the main causes of the Civil War would be the issue of slavery and the opposing views of each section of the United States. Since Northerners were beginning to oppose slavery, the South saw that as a threat to their economy. While the North embraced change, the South wanted to continue the static lifestyle. These causes ultimately led to the Civil War, which was a turning point in American history because of its radical results. 2. I find Garrison’s argument impressive and convincing because of his authoritative tone, as well as the passion oozing from his paper. I honestly think it’s reasonable. Even though it seemed like a bad choice, they had their reasons and it was logical. However, they should’ve known that under their conditions, there was no way they could’ve won an extended war against an all-powerful trade tycoon. Objective 3 1. I would force myself into the Southerner’s capital and force them to give up. Preferably, no violence would be necessary. He did a good job in trying to unite the people through peaceful means in his speech, but the South just did not want it. No sane person (or in this case, state) would want to be ruled according to another person’s will. The South had their reasons and the determination, so as Lincoln, I would’ve tried to crush their will and determination without violence at first, but if it is necessary, I wouldn’t mind resorting to violence. 2. I think the South had the homeland advantage. They could quickly transport goods because they were in close proximity of each other. The North had the technology and numbers. Since the North embraces technology, the people who work in factories clearly outnumber the South and thus they have more goods along with more men to fight. Being superior in firepower and men would lead the North to winning with some struggle at first. An extended battle would not fit the South, and they dragged it on for too
