At the end of this essay, you may understand why The Secret Life of Walter Mitty captured my interest and why I have chosen to write this essay on this particular literature. Usually, I have a hard time reading. Not because I have trouble reading the words, I have trouble reading because I tend to lose focus when something does not grab my attention. I am the type of person who likes to use my imagination while I am reading. It helps me visualize what I am reading and helps me connect to whatever I am reading.
My English is so poor; I want to improve my English. First time, I avoided classes that involved a lot of writing, as I was still intimidated by past failures. But when poor writing began to affect my grades in other courses, I decided to take a composition class. Now, I use my On Course textbook in my English class, this journal will help me about self-awareness. I began to see how negative scripts could cause problems.
I talk to my friends in a different way than I should, so when I begin to write, I write what I’m use to speaking. This is another major problem I have in writing because I will never learn how to write proper English. My third goal is to focus and understand a piece of literature. In other words, if we begin to read an uninteresting book, I start to slack off and not pay any attention. I need to learn to get use to books that I never imagined me reading because I don’t have a choice but to do it.
Having an imagination is necessary to get deeper in the story, and a good memory is also required to tie the pieces of the story together. And of course an artistic sense to appreciate the beauty of the author’s writing. Nabokov states “Since the master artist used his imagination in creating his book, it is natural and fair that the consumer of a book should use his imagination too.” The reader needs to also understand and appreciate the language used by the author. He needs to pay attention and notice the details in a novel and not just the general storyline. He needs to read with an open mind regardless of other people’s judgment of the novel.
Disappointed as I was I realized its not always the subject as much as it is your form and process that gets the grade I learned to pay more attention to my technique and process. When writing an essay or paper I tend to get nervous, scared and even intimidated. I often question if I’m using correct grammar, punctuations and form. Inexperience usually gets the best of me and I freeze. I remember when writing was fun, but it feels more like a chore to me now then
Also, it is difficult for people to speak out or act against wrongdoings because most people are too shy or even scared. This is because when one speaks out he or she might put themselves at risk of getting hurt depending on the circumstance, or some people might not want to get into other people's business. Prompt 2 The writer of Diary 36 of The Freedom Writers Diary asks, "Why should I read books about people that don’t look like me? People that I don’t even know and that I'm not going to understand because they don't understand me!" I would answer this student's question if I was his or her teacher by explaining how learning about people that don't look like me affected my life and how it can affect his or her life.
However, the more literature lessons I attend, the less sure I become of how I interpret books. I do not know if I always understand the book the way the author intended it, but I think that that is all right. I believe that a book can mean a variety of different things to different people, depending on their knowledge and frame of reference. Once a book (or poem or song or painting for that
Running head: COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES ESSAY Comprehension Strategies Essay Grand Canyon University: EED 475 January 20, 2013 Comprehension Strategies Essay Comprehension is one of the biggest areas in reading that many have struggles. It is often found that students have the ability to read a given text, however, they are reading without the basis of understanding what they actually read. In essence, students are reading without a purpose. In an effort to help students build upon their comprehension skills, teachers should develop strategic activities that facilitate comprehension of narrative, expository and poetic texts. Strategic activities may include presentation of the text, vocabulary development, using graphic organizers, and/ or previewing the text.
I was nervous and I didn’t have speaking points so I just decided to read directly from my script. One weakness that I had while delivering this speech was memory, which is one of the classical cannons of rhetoric. I didn’t practice as much as I should so I decided to read directly from my script, since I didn’t remember everything I wrote. Another weakness was pronunciation, I didn’t pronounce some words correctly which led me to pause and re-read it again. Delivering this speech was a little difficult for me since I’m a little shy in front of a group of people.
Some effects of these problems are that they have poor spelling skills. While texting, words automatically “pop up” when you’re typing. It is no longer necessary to know how to spell when using a phone. It will give you suggestions, sometimes using auto-correct. This has taken away the need for proofreading or even knowing basic spelling.
