The cultural context set also allows the reader to see contrasting opinions/ beliefs which help in gaining a better understanding of the relationship between the authors beliefs and their beliefs of their society. In Lucy, the reoccurring theme of British colonialism has an immense role in the way that the protagonist approaches things and hence highlights and reflects the authors perception on the matter. Colonialism is repeatedly strung throughout the novel as the protagonist has flashbacks about her homeland, which was a British Colony. She came from a British educational system, which had influence on her perception of certain things. This is most commonly reflected in the differing views on the daffodils between Lucy and Mariah.
Gene begins to work harder in school so that his academics are able to match Phineas’s athletic ability. An instance of Gene’s hard work occurs when Gene expresses his desire to stay in the dorm and study for his French exam rather than go the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session meeting. Phineas then proceeds to say that he is shocked Gene even needs to study, which sparks the thought in Gene’s mind, “It seemed that he had made some kind of parallel between my studies and his sports” (58). This thought only galvanizes Gene to study even harder in order to surpass Phineas. Additionally, Gene makes an effort to do what is morally right in several cases in order to rival Phineas’s natural goodness.
There are many different constructions and theories on personality which all have their own strengths and weaknesses and all of which try to offer an explanation to the differences in people’s behaviour. This essay will look at Hans Eysenck’s Trait Theory (1965) which is interested in measuring people’s personality through traits. According to this perspective, traits are stable over time and differ between individuals. We will also look at George Kelly’s Personal Construct Theory (1955.) He believed that people develop constructs as internal ideas of reality to help them understand the world around them and that the way the world is viewed is based on individual experiences, interpretations and observations.

Psychology is a discipline which uses academic and social science to investigate and research areas of mental function and behaviour. Psychologists undertake their research to understand how social learning, behaviour and cognitive functions can affect individuals within society. Social learning has evolved with the development of technology. The greater access to technology in society has led to research on the effects this method of learning has and has shown there could be a correlation with learned behaviours from childhood. Behaviourism research shows there is a causal link between negative and positive rewards, and the influences on behaviour patterns in animals showed that behaviour could change according to rewards.

When a young American teacher turns up with a unique teaching style in which the others teachers at the academy frown upon. It becomes a constant struggle of non-conformity versus authority and idealism versus realism. An important idea in this film is Non conformity vs. authority; you can see this idea developed through numerous camera shots and angles throughout the film.
