President Abraham Lincoln and Slavery Ricky Thomas His 115 Jeff Handford April 20, 2014 In the early days of Lincoln’s journey to the presidency he ran on the platform that he was very much opposed to slavery. In early debates with Douglas, Lincoln stated several times that he felt that holding African Americans against their will and forcing them to work without pay was wrong. Now even though Lincoln was opposed to slavery he never felt that African Americans and whites were equal. The fact that he felt that the two sides were not equal lead him to feel that colonization of African Americans would be the best thing for the ending result of slavery (USHistory.org, 2013). Lincoln and congress knew that if they would have said the war was about freeing the slaves in the beginning that slave holder states that were still a part of the union would stop supporting the union. So after truly understanding what the slave meant to the Southern armies during this part of the war, they passed a confiscation act that declared all slaves that were being used by the armies would considered as contraband (USHistory.org, 2013). By passing this act this allowed any seizing of slaves used by the confederate army to not be returned to their master or the armies as long as they were in rebellion. This also pushed Lincoln and congress to the decision that the war was now about freeing the slaves. The next one was a publicized meeting with African American residents in Washington (USHistory.org, 2013). Lincoln used this meeting to urge the residents to go back and help get other African Americans to leave the slave states and join their cause.
