This happened a lot in American slavery when the slaves were treated as less than human and more like objects by their masters and overseers. After Meena was brought into the brothel, a white-haired customer bought her virginity. The owners and customers did not care about her opinions and treated her as a sex object. They dehumanized her by treating her poorly. The owners of the brothel beat her with belts and iron rods for disobeying them.
But, researchers are not shadowing light on why low income people are poor and often stay that way. A healthy, vibrant family man, and a prize winning journalist David K. Shipler seemed concerned about others than about himself. The Working Poor: Invisible in America, tells us that poverty is the fault of society. The poor faces a system that makes it almost impossible for them to rise. The writer, describes the lives of America’s low wage earners and families living in or near poverty line, interviewing many individuals and narrating their stories in great details.
Because many people feel that they alive yet dead, not being able to do as they want, always having to answer to someone else, tired of living in poverty and feeling there is no hope for a better life. They get caught in the people trafficking. The USA estimates that there are between 700,000 and four million persons trafficked across international borders, with some 50,000 of them to the US. Mostly women are caught up in these rings because they are used as prostitutes, domestic servants, and sweat shops, etc. They have been promised a new life but received unsafe and unhealthy working conditions and the risk of AIDS and other STDS.
In fact, the actual condition of them is miserable. Farmers are suffering from low wage, lack motivation, and consumers have no interests. Firstly, subsistence wages are the most serious problem for famers. They can get only a little money despite fair trade. According to FLO-CERT, their payment is 1.26 dollars per pound at the lowest, which is 10 percent higher than the market price.
The responsible authorities don’t have efficient policies and laws to regulate this business, thereby facilitating human trafficking to uncontrollable levels. This article was meant to expose the rot within the society today when it comes to issues of human trafficking, slavery and prostitution. Swartz uses the example of one victim by the name of Kiki, who had gone through the saddening ordeal of being lured to migrate into the US hoping to secure a promising job opportunity in a restaurant. Prior, Kiki had been in an abusive marriage in Thailand, her native country. With a job as a secretary and 3 children to take care of, she saw the opportunity in US could help her meet her family expenses and help in upgrading her economic status.

While trying to achieve this, she got caught past the curfew and was almost raped but a strange man that called himself “V” saved her. As the novel goes on, V and Evey have a conversation that says: V: I may have killed those fingermen that attacked you the other night too, but I heard no objection to that. Violence can be used for good.
Take a moment to imagine, a child living in poverty, no younger than five years of age, befriending a much older stranger. Imagine, this stranger manipulating the child, leading them to believe that they could find a job that could help the child make a better life for themselves and their family. Imagine the child, who is ready to work, being kidnapped and sold into a human trade market where they are forced to work as slaves or organ donors, never to see their family again. For millions of children, and women, around the world, this is a reality. Human trafficking is an expanding, worldwide trade, based on the selling and purchasing of men, women, and children for labor and organ donation.
