What Is Peggy Mcintosh's Struggle Against Racism?

A lot of pieces have been written on the topic of racism in past years, though most of these articles do not give a solution to the problem at hand, and merely acknowledge that racism exists. Peggy McIntosh believes she has found the root cause for the current stagnation in the fight against racism, and sites occasions in her life where racism is especially prevalent. After having read Peggy McIntosh’s article, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” I have found that racism is a widely ignored topic in the United States. It seems as though no one wants to accept that there is a problem. The purpose of McIntosh’s article is to make the public aware that racism is still a current issue in today’s society that needs to be changed.…show more content…
One item I found interesting was her listed number 6, “When I am told about our national heritage or about ‘civilization,’ I am shown that people of my own color made it what it is” (McIntosh, 2). This reminded me of the mindset found in another article, written by Meizhu Lui. In this piece, “The Roots of the Racial Wealth Divide,” Lui cites that the reason whites are so vastly richer and well off is due in most part to the support the government gave to white people while the country was still in its early development. At one point in the reading, Lui mentions a situation in which a white man, Ed, says that he understands the plight of other races, but that he does not agree with the notion that he should feel guilty about it personally, as he has studied worked hard for what he has today. The conductor of the discussion then chastises him, saying that he only has what he has today because of the benefits the Homestead Act gave to his family that was denied to other races, that his father received help from the GI bill that other races could not as easily access. From this additional reading we see that McIntosh is not the only person who believes that white people are responsible and need to do the grunt of the work in giving up what we have to help other
