Gulf Oil Case Summary In the late 1970’s Gulf Oil Corporation noticed a negative outlook on the future of their company. Oil reserves were reaching all time lows, and the future didn’t look bright for Gulf. In response to the poor company performance, James Lee became chairman of Gulf Corp. and entered the company with a different outlook. Lee’s strategy was to focus on oil, and move away from Gulf’s history of acquiring coal mines, uranium mines, and other such resources. The second part of Lee’s strategy was heavily focuses on exploration and expenditures to discover new oil reserves.
Environmental Effects of Hydraulic Fracturing and the Mining of Silica Sand Hydraulic fracturing is hardly a new method of obtaining natural gas from deep beneath the earth’s surface. Since 1860, oil conglomerates have been injecting oil wells with chemicals from nitroglycerin to napalm in order to extract a precious and needed commodity. Not until recently have those with an interest in environmental issues been asking the questions that have gone unasked. Injecting a shale formation 6000 feet below the surface with a somewhat hazardous mix of chemicals, water and sand can seem bizarre and, to the environmentally conscientious, frightening. Hydraulic fracturing is currently being conducted in various locations on the East Coast and the Midwest.
Steps taken by customers: Hamilton Oil Company is the largest oil company active in Canada and operating 30% of the total oil producing wells. Due to changes in Power rate schedule and speculation over penalties in future due to overmotoring, John Bridges, Hamilton’s chief electrical engineer initiated field tests on oil well pumping motors to identify the specification of economical motor. Findings by Bridges 1. 3 to 5 hp motor is sufficient to lift the fluid. 2.
However, the UK’s Environmental Agency found flow-back fluid from a Lancashire fracking site contained “notably high levels of sodium, bromide and iron, as well as higher values of lead”. Some studies have even found formaldehyde, acetic acids, boric acids and hundreds of others. Typically 5 to 10 chemicals are used in one frack job, but each well can be fracked multiple times which means the chemicals that are identified, and many which are not, increase massively. Most wells are being drilled below water systems and use a terrifying mixture of 596 chemicals per frack! Fracking is also known to generate methane, but it is not clear how much.
The Privatization of Mexico’s Oil Industry: Benefits and Problems associated with Privatization Introduction Currently, Mexico’s Congress is discussing an energy reform proposal put forward by Mexico’s President, Enrique Pena Nieto. The President is looking to privatize Mexico’s oil sector in the upcoming months. This energy reform proposal is significant for Mexico and its citizens. The energy reform is also very controversial for Mexico because the country’s oil industry has been nationalized since 1938 and is considered the cornerstone of Mexican National pride (Azul, 2012). President Pena Nieto believes that the reform is the answer to many of Mexico’s oil industry’s problems.
The Python, also known as the slow-burning crisis, on the other hand, is a crisis that develops over a longer periods (Moore & Seymour 2005). British Petroleum, commonly referred to as BP, is a global leader in oil and gas exploration and supply. It was founded in the early 1900s where it was then referred to as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. This was because it was a company established in Britain and whose main activity was exploring Persian oil fields. The company, which has its headquarters in London, operates in more than 80 countries and employs over 80,000 employees globally.
"Think about that. If another country threatened to wipe out an American town, we'd do everything in our power to protect ourselves," Obama said in the address. "Climate change poses the same threat, right now. "Even though environmentalists welcome the President's focus, some conservationists have accused Obama of climate hypocrisy, citing the recent approval for Royal Dutch Shell to begin oil and gas drilling in the Chukchi Sea off of Alaska's northwest coast.
In the article “Too safe for our own good?” published in “The Washington Times” July 21, 2010, the authors Henry I. Miller and Gregory Conko report the overuse of the ‘’precautionary principle’’, which is defined as ‘’a belief that governments should implement regulatory measures to prevent or restrict actions that raise even conjectural threats of harm to human health or the environment’’. As an example, the authors discussed Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical contained in consumer products. The authors state that The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) denied the banning of BPA because it was not found evidence that this chemical can cause negative effects on people’s health. Conversely, environmental activists sustain the idea that BPA causes considerable damage, because of this it should be banned. In addition, Miller and Conko argue that regulatory decisions should be based on risk-benefit.
Bush lifted a 1990 executive order by the first President Bush banning offshore drilling, while at the same time calling for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. As of August 2008, however, a 1982 congressional ban is still in place, making Bush's action a symbolic gesture, and now the congressional ban is being debated in terms of both environmental issues and U.S. energy independence. In an almost complete reversal of policy, on July 30, 2008, the U.S. Department of the Interior released a news report saying that the nation's energy situation has dramatically changed in the past year. Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, said, "Areas that were considered too expensive to develop a year ago are no longer necessarily out of reach based on improvements to technology and safety." Kempthorne went on to say that, "The American people and the President want action, and a new initiative (the development of a new oil and natural gas leasing program for the U.S.
