Women in the United States have had to fight for their rights on many different issues that concerned them and should have never even been an issue that they had to deal with in the first place. In the early 1800’s women were considered second class citizens in the United States. Women were to get married and have children in the early 1800’s. Women were not allowed to own property or earn and keep any wages after marriage. It seems very sad to me that men in this country believe that they own or have the right to tell women or even another individual what they have to do or how they have to behave. Women were given the right to vote in the United States in 1920 when the 19th Amendment was passed and ratified into the constitution. This right for women to vote became known as the women’s suffrage right. Women did not even have equal rights to men in the United States until 1972 when an Equal Rights Amendments was passed into law. Women had been fighting for equals to men since 1923 and continue to fight to this day to have the Equal Rights Amendment ratified into the constitution. Women were not allowed to take birth control until 1960 and even then it was still illegal in some states and viewed to be morally wrong to get a prescription for birth control. Women did not have to right to obtain a college education, some colleges would not even accepted female students. Harvard University did not accept female students until 1977 to obtain a college education. Women did not have the right to choose their own professions, and instead were…show more content…
These types of things are portrayed in commercials that are broadcasted on television and also in the local news. The status of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) individuals throughout history in the United States have been that they were viewed as morally wrong individuals. The GLBT individuals did not have rights to their happiness or their well-being. There has been too many hate crimes committed against the GLBT individuals in the past and still continue to occur in today’s society. In the past the only time you heard of the GLBT in society or the media was when there were crimes committed against them. Over time the GLBT individuals have started fighting to gain some rights to their happiness and well-being. Some social and political issues relevant to women and GLBT individuals in the United States are that both groups of individuals are seeking and pursuing equal rights. With President Obama’s help and support the GLBT community has made their presence known. President Obama has delivered a speech letting the world or society know that there will be laws passed in the future to begin protecting the GLBT community. With these protection laws put into place for the GLBT
