What Factors Affects Intrinsic Motivation

There are many different contributors to motivation within people that I never realized just how many theories there are. Goal-setting theory is the one that I am most familiar with and the one that I have the most questions about. When I think of setting a goal for myself at work I am thinking of a dollar amount that I am setting out to sell, or a certain number of products I want to sell per hour. The book says that goals are also seen as deadlines for tasks and I do not necessarily see that. Goals are not just the “primary drivers of the intensity and persistence of effort.” I see my goals as what I need to do, but not exactly how hard or long I need to work. This is a question that I believe every single person can have a different reasoning to their answer. I think in a lot of cases extrinsic motivation kills intrinsic motivation. When I am doing a great job at work, and seeing my progress makes me want to work harder I believe that if someone came in a said “wow, this deserves a bonus,” I think that would almost demotivate me. I have been internally motivating myself so much that someone else trying to motivate me would have a negative outcome. I never knew that business schools had a policy that disclosed their grades from any recruiter. When it comes to business school, I think that a lot of students work only to see what kind of impact their grades will have on their chances of getting a job or into a certain school/program. Personally, if I did not have to disclose my grades to graduate school or jobs, I would not have worked as hard as I did for four years. College is tricky when it comes to motivation because there are so many different types of people. University can almost be seen as a compensation system, because at the end of the day we are being compensated with a degree, or two. University can be used in every aspect of motivation. Most people are extrinsically motivated in college, because they are doing the work in hopes that they receive a better job or get into graduate
