Nowadays, our lives are increasingly driven by computers, phones, Internet and all kinds of technology devices. Ones need to constantly check the weblogs, text messages and update Facebook’s status. As the technology has been playing a bigger role in our lives, it slowly influences our skills in critical thinking and the ability to communicate. In Jennifer 8 lee’s “I Think, Therefore IM” and Clive Thompson’s “PowerPoint Makes You Dumb”, they both talk about a change in how language is understood and used by today’s generation. Although technology devices can be a useful tool to collect information or resources, it can be an obstacle in learning because its influences the language and understandings by taking away ones’ abilities to think, skipping the details and declining communication skills. Technology negatively affects our intelligence due to the unconscious using of IM language. In Jennifer 8 Lee’s article, “I Think, Therefore IM,” she described how instant message languages become frequently used among today’s generation. Teenagers spend much more time to text IM form of language than formal writing in school. Lee said “But teenagers, whose social life can rely as much these days on text communication as the spoken word say that they use instant-messaging shorthand without thinking about it.” (153) The fact is reliance on text message takes away ones’ abilities to think deeply because they are unconsciously using instant message language, which makes them do not realize that they are using it on the formal writing paper or class work. Since they do not go back to double check the message they typed and careless about the incorrect format or language, it slowly affects their abilities to think and analyze. In Thompson’s article, “PowerPoint Makes You Dumb” he described that a failed mission of space shuttle led to the problems that PowerPoint might have.
