1. WHAT ARE THE 3 MANAGEMENT SKILLS AS OUTLINED BY ROBERT KATZ? OF THE 3 WHICH IS THE ONE THAT IS MISSING IN MOST GRENADIAN MANAGERS AND WHY? Robert Katz outlined three management skills that are key to successful management, they are: Technical, Human and conceptual. Technical skills refer to the ability to apply specialized knowledge or expertise in accomplishing tasks in the work place. Specialized knowledge is the knowledge gained from studying a specific field for example; engineering or architecture. A manager in an architectural firm should have the ability to analyze building structures and the context in which they were designed and modeled. Human skills are those which allow managers to understand, motivate and work well with their employees and co-workers. For managers, being able to understand their employees is very important. A manager who does not understand his or her employees will not be able to identify when something is wrong, neither will he or she be able to motivate their employees because they would not have the understanding necessary to know what will make those employees more or less productive. A healthy work environment where communication flows easily between managers and employees is vital to all companies. Conceptual skills on the other hand, involve the use of mental abilities to solve problems in the workplace. Managers who possess conceptual skills use them to identify opportunities for innovation, expansion and problem solving. The skill that most Grenadian managers lack in the work place is Human skill.
