Children born into homelessness are more likely to have low birth weights and are at greater risk of death. Homelessness also exposes infants to environmental factors that can endanger their health. Because homeless families often have little access to health care, many homeless infants lack essential immunizations. As of June 2008, there are more than 100,000 homeless children in Massachusetts. Out of these numbers 2,472 living in emergency shelter funded by the Ma Department of Transitional Assistance.
Temporary assistance for needy families Demetrica Williams SW 3520 Temporary assistance for needy families Families First, Tennessee’s welfare reform program, began in September 1996, under a federal waiver and replaced the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. The federal waiver expired June 30, 2007. We currently operate our program in compliance with the Federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. TANF provides temporary cash benefits to families who have children and are experiencing financial difficulties. These benefits are time-limited to 60 months in a participant's lifetime.
Among people age 85 or older, about two-thirds report functional limitations. One study estimates that more than two-thirds of 65-year-olds will need assistance to deal with a loss in functioning at some point during their remaining years of life. (Congressional Budget Office, 2013) Long Term Services and Support (LTSS) refer to the assistance programs available for the aging population needing to deal with functional and cognitive limitations. What is the working poor? There are 10.4 million low income working families in the United States. 47 million people, include 23.5 million children live in low-income families (BLS, 2010). The working poor represent the working population with a disposable income that does not cover basic living necessities, such as food, housing, and utilities. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2011), more than 146 million Americans live at or below the poverty level.
