Network Concepts and Apps- MIS 589 Week 3 - Text Book Questions. Question 1: What does Data link layer do? The data link layer is responsible for sending and receiving messages to and from other computers. Its job is to reliably move a message from one computer over one circuit to the next computer where the message needs to go. Its two main functions are data link layer’s connection to the network layer above it done by the sub-layer (logic layer Control (LLC)) and second function being done by the sub-layer MAC- Media access control which controls the physical hardware. Question 10: Describe four types of noise. Which is likely to pose the greatest problem to network managers? Four types of noise; White noise; is the background hiss or static on radios and telephones) is caused by the thermal agitation of electrons and therefore is inescapable. Impulse noise; is heard as a click or a crackling noise and can last as long as 1/100 of a second. Cross-talk noise; occurs when one circuit picks up signals in another circuit. Inter-modulation noise; is a special type of cross talk. The signals from two circuits combine to form a new signal that falls into a frequency band reserved for another signal. This type of noise is similar to harmonics in music. Impulse noise seem to be the greatest problem to the network managers and to avoid this managers needs to avoid placing cables near lights and heavy machinery and locating communication cables away from power cables. Question 26: Under what conditions does a data link layer protocol need an address? Under Point-to-Point protocol; It is designed to transfer data over a point-to-point circuit but provides an address so that it can be used on multipoint circuits. Its often used in
