Name Professor English 102 Day, Month, Year We Real Cool In the poem “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks the speaker shows a self awareness in regard to the choices that the pool players have made in life. These choices serve as a warning to readers such as myself, that this lifestyle can result in death. Being cool can be defined based on one’s culture, lifestyle or peers which usually leads to deviant behaviors that are shown or associated within Gangs. In today’s society the norms which are people like myself who have morals and respect and were taught as young children that your are to treat others the way you want to be treated view “real cool” as being a real fool; therefore, it causes separation and division throughout the world. Some people run to the suburbs while others choose urban living because one is trying to escape from the other. Peer pressure, fighting, bullying, and gangs can cause some of today’s young adults to make poor choices as I myself once did. Peer pressure is one of the hardest things that a child has to face. Based on my experience, while growing up as a child, just going to school was one of the toughest decisions that I had to make. My school was in a rough neighborhood, and I was raised with very high standards and respect for others. The kids in my school did not share these values, which was extremely difficult. I was left with making many choices that did not involve my parents. In other words it was time for me to grow up and show the world what my parents had instilled in me. While some find it hard to make the right choice, I just kept to myself and observed others, not realizing that made others more eager to know me. For some reason it seemed as though no matter how hard I tried to stay away from trouble, trouble followed me because the wrong groups seemed drawn to me.
